LITERARY GILD

once home to presses that inked the earliest editions of the chicago tribune, this printer's row loft now tells a new story—one of modern family life layered with soul, music + a deep love for meaningful design.

the story behind how the project came together, however, is all serendipity and circumstance: editor meets designer, they become pals, editor writes about the designer’s school-building treks to tanzania + features her home [MAGIC KINGDOM] in sixtysix mag. now fast forward 15 years and here we are—a full circle moment that brings the pair back together to collab on the scribe’s historic home sweet home.

getting on the same page is easy when you speak the same language. PROjECT. dialed in a layout that flexes for a creative couple and their two shorties. spaces open and close as needed: an art studio morphs into an office; bedrooms play double-duty as playrooms; the whole place sings with rhythm + function.

we kept the bones honest—exposed brick, timber beams, and history etched in tile [yes, that’s a gutenberg mosaic]. but layered in warmth with smoky hues, sculptural lighting, and furniture that feels collected, not curated. think a sarah ellison sofa vibing with a rohde easy chair by herman miller, while an armadillo rug + the client’s own art in the office + as a powder room wall mural grounds it all in sentimental cool.

hushhh… if you listen carefully, there’s a steady beat running through this space—literally, thanks to a high-fidelity sound system we put on blast and metaphorically, in the way every detail feels composed. print may be dead, but this place? fully alive.
